Water Treatment, Supply Assessments & Compliance

Flow Consulting provides water supply investigations, water quality assessments, treatment system design and technical reporting for existing facilities and proposed developments. We help property owners, organisations and project teams understand their water sources, identify risks and plan practical improvements to water supply infrastructure.

Understanding Your Water Supply

Every water supply has different requirements. Bore water, roof-collected rainwater and surface water can present different water quality risks, so treatment and infrastructure recommendations must reflect the individual site.

We review how water is collected, stored, pumped, treated and distributed, including tanks, pumps, pipework, filtration equipment and points of use. Assessments consider infrastructure condition, potential contamination pathways, available storage, water demand and operational requirements.

Where appropriate, we document existing arrangements through site observations, assessment reports, drawings and process schematics to identify deficiencies and inform future planning.

Water Quality Testing & Supply Assessments

Flow Consulting has undertaken water sampling and coordinated laboratory analysis as part of on-site water supply investigations. Results can identify concerns such as E. coli contamination and water quality characteristics including pH, iron and manganese.

We review laboratory findings alongside the condition and operation of the supply, then recommend practical next steps such as further investigation, tank cleaning, treatment improvements or retesting. Laboratory testing is carried out by the testing laboratory, with sampling scope and any ongoing testing requirements determined for each project.

Our experience includes assessments of privately managed supplies at marae and community facilities, where multiple sources, ageing tanks and differing treatment arrangements may need to be considered together.

Water Treatment Design & Infrastructure Upgrades

Where improvements are needed, we develop treatment concepts, process schematics and preliminary upgrade scopes showing how collection, storage, pumping, filtration, disinfection and distribution systems can work together.

Depending on the source and assessment findings, options may include cartridge or media filtration, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, chemical dosing, pumps, valves, flow meters, sample points, pressure gauges and monitoring equipment. The appropriate solution depends on water quality, intended use, demand and applicable requirements.

We also review existing installations and recommend improvements such as replacing deteriorated tanks, upgrading treatment equipment, improving rainwater collection or undertaking further testing. Where commissioned, recommendations can be prioritised to support budgeting and staged works.

Rainwater Harvesting, Reuse & Multi-Building Supplies

Flow Consulting assesses rainwater harvesting, bore water and combined supplies serving individual facilities or multiple buildings. We consider tank capacity, pumps, top-up arrangements, distribution networks and the practical demands placed on a system.

For developments, we can undertake water demand assessments and review potential non-potable uses, including toilet flushing, irrigation and hose taps. Project-specific calculations help inform storage volumes, supply arrangements and proposed reuse systems.

Our investigations for Waikato Tainui marae have included initial three-waters reviews, follow-up water quality investigations and recommendations for remedial works. We consider intermittent peak demand, different water sources and opportunities to simplify operation and maintenance. Non-potable systems require appropriate separation and backflow protection from drinking water supplies.

Drinking Water Compliance & Technical Reporting

New Zealand drinking water supplies operate within a regulatory framework that includes the Water Services Act 2021 and requirements administered by Taumata Arowai. Applicable obligations depend on the type and classification of the supply.

Flow Consulting supports clients with technical assessments, treatment recommendations and design information to assist their planning. Reports may cover observed conditions, available water quality results, supplier responsibilities, treatment upgrades, sampling, operations and maintenance considerations.

Deliverables may include site investigation reports, supply descriptions, result reviews, process schematics, preliminary scopes and follow-up recommendations. Regulatory duties, registration, assurance rules and compliance dates should be checked against current official guidance for the specific supply; technical reporting does not constitute regulatory approval.
