Fire Hydrant Flow & Water Pressure Testing
Flow Consulting provides professional fire hydrant flow and water pressure testing services to establish the available flow rates and pressure within existing water supply networks.
Using calibrated testing equipment, our team conducts on-site hydrant testing and prepares comprehensive reports detailing the recorded water flow and pressure results. This information assists developers, engineers, fire protection designers and property owners in understanding the capacity of the existing water supply infrastructure.
Whether planning a new development, extending an existing facility or assessing water supply requirements for fire protection systems, reliable testing information is an important part of the design and planning process.
Understanding Existing Water Supply & Development Requirements
Before undertaking a new development or building alteration, it is important to understand the available water supply and whether the existing infrastructure can support the proposed requirements. Flow Consulting conducts hydrant flow and pressure testing to establish the performance of the existing water supply network at the time of testing.
The recorded results help project teams assess development capacity, proposed building layouts, firefighting water demands and potential infrastructure limitations. This information is particularly valuable for commercial facilities, multiple buildings and staged developments, including projects requiring sprinkler systems or significant firefighting water supplies.
Identifying potential limitations early allows developers and their consultants to investigate alternative design approaches, additional infrastructure or network upgrades. Flow Consulting provides measured testing data to support these decisions, while the relevant designers and engineers assess the specific development and fire protection requirements.
Hydrant Flow & Pressure Testing
Hydrant flow testing measures the volume of water available from selected fire hydrants under controlled testing conditions. Using calibrated equipment, Flow Consulting records water discharge rates together with static and residual pressure readings to provide an indication of network performance.
Static pressure is the water pressure recorded when no water is being discharged through the test hydrants. Residual pressure is the pressure remaining in the network while water is flowing during testing.
Where required, testing can be undertaken at specified flow rates identified by hydraulic or fire protection designers, including for proposed sprinkler systems, firefighting water supplies and assessments of existing installations. Recording the relationship between flow and pressure helps the design team assess the existing supply under different demand conditions and identify whether further investigation or design measures may be needed.
Comprehensive Testing Reports
Following on-site testing, Flow Consulting prepares a detailed report documenting the recorded water flow and pressure results. Reports can include the test location, date and time, hydrants used, measured flow rates, static and residual pressures, results tables and hydrant location maps.
These reports provide a clear record of the water supply conditions observed at the time of testing. The information can be supplied to developers, hydraulic engineers, fire protection designers and other project stakeholders to support sprinkler and firefighting water supply assessments, design development, infrastructure planning and building consent documentation where applicable.
The reports present measured test results for consideration by the relevant project designers and engineers; they do not replace the assessment of whether the supply meets a particular system or development requirement.
Local Coordination & Informed Decisions
Fire hydrant testing often involves infrastructure owned or managed by local councils and water supply authorities. Flow Consulting liaises with relevant councils and, where required, Fire and Emergency New Zealand to assist with testing arrangements and information requirements.
With experience throughout Hamilton and the wider Waikato region, Flow Consulting understands the coordination involved in obtaining relevant water supply information.
Our approach focuses on reliable measurements and clear, practical reporting that project teams can use with confidence. By providing this information early, we help clients better understand existing water supply infrastructure before committing to important design and development decisions
